Mederma is highly regarded by doctors and physicians as the number one scar treatment on the market. Many people never even consider Mederma as a stretch mark removal cream; this is because many people don’t know that stretch marks are actually scars below the surface layer of the skin. While the majority of scars form because of a stubborn wound, stretch marks are scars that have formed deep with in the dermis layer of the skin because of over stretching.
Mederma is a truly one of a kind formula because it has a patented on its active ingredient Cepalin. Cepalin® is the proprietary botanical extract used in MEDERMA®. . This is the very reason to be sure to buy the name brand product Mederma, because other brands cannot copy the formula.
Cepalin is Mederma’s one active ingredient it possesses such potent properties that it has the ability of supporting the whole product on its own. While Mederma does include other ingredients to give it is smell and consistency Cepalin is the one and only active ingredient. So, what exactly does Cepalin do, and is it effective for reducing the appearance of stretch marks?
This is what the company that makes Mederma has to say about their active ingredient.
Cepalin: “Cepalin® is the proprietary botanical extract used in MEDERMA®. It comes from onions, which have historically been used to soothe skin irritation and inflammation. Cepalin® works to soften hardened scar tissue and improve the color, texture and overall appearance of scars.”
Since Cepalin is a proprietary botanical owned by Merz Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Mederma, it is nearly impossible to find anything on the product other than company issued statements about it. However, from the statements issued by the company itself, I have come to the conclusion that Mederma may not be the most effective product for stretch marks…let me tell you what has brought me to this conclusion.
When reading a statement placed on the company’s web-site I immediately noticed a contradiction, let me quote the company…
“As you probably know, a scar is a mark that remains after a wound heals. In ideal situations, they’re smooth, flat, and blend in with your surrounding skin. But a scar can be highly visible and even unattractive due to its size or location. Your age, nutrition and genetic make-up can also play a role in the appearance of scars”.
Here is another statement…
“Cepalin® works to soften hardened scar tissue and improve the color, texture and overall appearance of scars.”
If you have stretch marks, reach down and rub you hand over them. Stretch marks are typically smooth and need to be filled in rather than smoothed out. While Mederma, I am sure is completely effective on acne scarring or other surface wounds, stretch marks occur in the lower layers of tissue and Mederma lacks the ingredients needed to fill in these channels created by the dermal scar. Based on the ingredients in Mederma it is my opinion that if you are buying the product to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, it may not be as effective as other products on the marketplace.
Out of all the stretch mark creams tested, the highest rated stretch mark creams is: Revitol.
